Manchester City have secured their place in the Champions League knockout stages for the 11th consecutive season with a comfortable 3-0 win over Young Boys.
Erling Haaland, who now has 39 goals in 34 Champions League matches, opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute after Sandro Lauper tripped Matheus Nunes in the box.
Phil Foden doubled City’s lead on the stroke of half-time with a fine solo effort, and Haaland added his second in the 62nd minute with a stunning drive from 20 yards out.
Young Boys offered little in attack, and their task was made even more complicated when Lauper was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 53rd minute.
City cruised to victory in the end, and they will now look to secure the top spot in Group G when they host RB Leipzig in their final group match.
Haaland was again in scintillating form for City, scoring two goals and taking his tally for the season to 22 in all competitions. The Norwegian international is now the top scorer in the Champions League this season, with seven goals in four matches.
City’s defense was again solid, keeping their third clean sheet in their last four matches. The likes of John Stones, Nathan Ake, and Aymeric Laporte were all impressive, and they will be looking to continue their good form in the knockout stages.
City will now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they host Fulham on Saturday. The Citizens are currently in second place, two points behind Arsenal. They will be looking to close the gap on the Gunners and regain the top spot.
Young Boys’ Champions League campaign has been a disappointing one, with the Swiss side losing all four of their matches. They will now turn their attention to the Europa League, where they will face Slavia Prague in the knockout stages.
